Bacteria? In my food? EW!

Surprisingly enough, there is bacteria out there growing in our food, and most of us eat it everyday.  But don’t worry–it’s good for you!

Prebiotics and probiotics are types of good bacteria that aid in digestion and protect from other harmful bacteria. Probiotics are found in yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi, and prebiotics are found in whole grains, bananas, onions, garlic, honey and artichokes. Probiotics and prebiotics are also added to foods and are available as dietary supplements.

Convinced yet? Here’s what else it helps us with:

  • Treats diarrhea
  • Prevents cavities
  • Prevents and treats UTIs
  • Treats irritable bowel syndrome
  • Reduces bladder cancer recurrence
  • Speeds treatment of intestinal infections

  • Prevents or reduces the severity of colds and flu

Smoothies and juice recipes use yogurt as the main ingredient, combined with fresh fruits or other fresh materials. So, besides the healthy benefits of probiotics, you can also get vitamins from the fruits.
